The Swinging 'Gates is Colgate's only all female a cappella group. The 'Gates (as we are known by our loyal fans) was founded in 1974 by a group of courageous women seeking to share their beautiful voices. Comprised of over 25 members ranging in age from freshmen to seniors, this group is a student run, non-profit organization that reflects the hard work and dedication of all of the women involved. The Swinging 'Gates has built an extensive repertoire over the past 30 years. The 'Gates perform with only 13 women at a time, allowing us to optimize our musical dexterity. The diversity of music that results from the individual talents of our members allows us to present concerts which appeal to any audience. The 'Gates extensive traveling schedule is nationwide. The group follows Colgate's Division 1 football team throughout the fall season, visiting many cities in the East Coast. In addition, the group travels for two weeks during the winter's semester break to further destinations. Recent concerts have taken us from Disneyland to Southern Florida; 'Gates members love to perform for kids of all ages at schools along the way. The group also enjoys giving concerts for businesses; we have even sung the national anthem at a regulation NBA game.
